Free published lessons

These lessons are public, free to read, and connected to the full course map below.

AN1 · Interpret absolute value as distance on a number line

In Alberta Mathematics 20-1, absolute value describes distance, not a rule that simply erases a minus sign. A point at −2 is five…

TR3 · Solve triangles with the sine and cosine laws, including SSA ambiguity

The sine law is useful when a known angle is paired with its opposite side. But side–side–angle (SSA) information can make two…

RF3 · Analyze quadratic functions in vertex form

Vertex form makes the turning point of a parabola visible without completing a new calculation. In Mathematics 20-1, this is useful…

RF7 · Graph solution regions of linear and quadratic inequalities in two variables

An inequality in x and y describes an entire region, not just a curve. First graph the related equality as a boundary; then decide…

RF9 · Analyze arithmetic sequences and series in context

An arithmetic sequence is a list of terms that changes by the same amount each time. Mathematics 20-1 also asks for the sum of a…

Worked examples

Start with worked Grade 11 examples

These original examples introduce selected Math 20-1 expectations. The full expectation map is not a complete set of published written lessons or a substitute for official course materials and assignments. The strand-prefixed labels below identify the matching Ontario specific expectations; titles are concise study-guide paraphrases.

1. Vertex-form graph

Find the vertex and zeros of y = (x − 2)² − 4.

Worked method: The vertex is (2, −4). Setting y = 0 gives (x − 2)² = 4, so x = 0 or 4.

2. Two possible SSA triangles

Given A = 30°, a = 7, and b = 10, how many triangles are possible?

Worked method: Since 10 sin 30° = 5 < 7 < 10, two triangles are possible. Both must be checked rather than stopping at one inverse-sine result.

Try independently, then check

Write your own solution before opening each answer. If a step is unclear, review the matching expectation or a Grade 10 prerequisite.

Practice 1

Solve |x − 3| = 5.

Show worked answer

x = −2 or x = 8; each is five units from 3.

Practice 2

What value is excluded from 1/(x − 4)?

Show worked answer

x = 4, because the denominator would be zero.

Mathematical processes across expectations

These processes are practised throughout the course, rather than listed as separate lessons.

  • Connect algebraic steps with a labelled graph, number line, or triangle when it clarifies the result.
  • Check excluded values, graph windows, units, and extraneous roots.
  • Treat arithmetic and geometric sequences as discrete, not continuous, models.

Curriculum-aligned and reviewed before publication

This independent study guide follows the official course source. It is not an official government, school, or university publication.

Lessons may be AI-assisted or editorially prepared. Published content is checked for structure, notation, calculations, course boundaries, and readability before release. Because corrections can still be necessary, readers can report a problem.
