How to tell three important kinds of computer software apart

A computer may have a document editor open, an operating system managing the computer, and a programming language used to create software. These are all connected to computing, but they have different roles. In this lesson, you will learn to distinguish them by asking what each one is for: Is it a tool a person uses to do a task, a language used to describe instructions for a computer, or the software that manages the computer and supports other programs?

What you will learn

  • Explain the difference between an application, a programming language, and an operating system.
  • Classify familiar examples by what they do.
  • Describe how an application, a language, and an operating system can relate without treating them as the same thing.

1. Start with the purpose

An application, often called an app, is software intended to help a user carry out a task. A word processor helps create and edit documents. A web browser helps people view and interact with websites. A drawing program helps make or edit images. The key clue is the user's task, not the device on which the software appears.
An operating system is software that manages a computer's basic operation and provides services that other programs use. It helps the computer run applications and provides ways for a user to interact with the system. Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux distributions are examples of operating systems for computers. Android and iOS are examples for mobile devices.
A programming language is a language used to write instructions that can be translated or interpreted so a computer can carry them out. Python, Java, and C are examples. A language is not usually the finished tool a user opens to edit a document; it is a way to express instructions used to create software.
  • Application: software used to accomplish a user task.
  • Operating system: software that manages the computer and supports applications.
  • Programming language: a way to write instructions for a computer.

2. Use the roles to understand the relationship

Think about preparing a class presentation on a laptop. The operating system manages the computer and provides the setting in which programs can run. A presentation application lets you create and edit slides. A programmer might use Python or another programming language to write software, but the language itself is not the presentation application or the operating system.
A simple way to classify an item is to ask what role it plays in the situation. If it helps the person directly complete a task, it is likely an application. If it manages the computer and supports programs, it is an operating system. If it is used to write computer instructions, it is a programming language.
These roles can be related without being interchangeable. An application runs in an environment provided by an operating system. A programming language can be used to create an application or other software. The fact that all three are connected to software does not make their purposes the same.
  • Classify by function, not by whether something is called software.
  • An application and an operating system do different jobs, even though both are software.
  • A programming language is used to express instructions; it is not automatically a user application.

3. Check ambiguous cases carefully

Some names can be confusing because they refer to more than one thing in everyday conversation. For example, people may say “I use Python” when they mean they write code in Python, or when they mean they use a particular program that helps them work with Python. To answer accurately, identify the thing being discussed: the language, the program, or the operating system.
The same role-based test works when a device is unfamiliar. A tablet and a desktop computer may use different operating systems, but the classification questions do not change. Ask what the named item does rather than guessing from its brand, appearance, or location.
For reliable descriptions of particular products, consult their official documentation. Microsoft Support describes Windows features, Apple provides documentation for its operating systems, and the Python documentation describes Python as a programming language. Such references help verify specific names; the role-based distinctions in this lesson are the main ideas to apply.
  • A product name may be used casually to mean a language or a program; clarify the intended meaning.
  • A device is not itself an operating system: it runs an operating system.
  • When a name is unfamiliar, classify it from its stated function.

Worked example

Classify a school laptop setup

A student uses Windows on a laptop, opens a word-processing program to write an essay, and learns Python to write instructions for a small program. Classify Windows, the word processor, and Python.
Different roles on one laptop
supports runningcan be used to create soWindows operating systemWord-processing applicatPython programming langu

The operating system supports the application; Python is a language used to write instructions.

  1. Look at each role
Windows manages the laptop and supports programs, so it is the operating system. The word processor directly helps the student write an essay, so it is an application. Python is used to write computer instructions, so it is a programming language.
  2. State the classification
The three items are connected in the same computing situation, but each has a different purpose.
Answer: Windows: operating system. Word processor: application. Python: programming language.
Check: The classification follows each item's function, rather than the fact that all three are related to computers.

Worked example

Classify items by what they do

For each item, identify its role: (a) macOS manages a desktop computer and allows programs to run; (b) a drawing program lets a user create an illustration; (c) Java is used to write computer instructions.
  1. Identify the purpose in each description
The description of macOS focuses on managing the computer and supporting programs. The drawing program is used directly by a person to complete a task. Java is described as a way to write instructions.
  2. Match purposes to categories
Managing the computer identifies an operating system; a user task identifies an application; writing instructions identifies a programming language.
Answer: (a) macOS: operating system. (b) Drawing program: application. (c) Java: programming language.
Check: Each classification matches the function stated in the problem.

Worked example

Sort out a confusing description

A classmate says, “Python is the app I use to make a program.” What follow-up would help you distinguish the language from the program?
  1. Notice the unclear word
The word “Python” may refer to the programming language, while “the app I use” sounds like a separate program. The description does not make clear which one the classmate means.
  2. Ask about the function
Ask whether they mean the language used to write instructions or the particular application they open to write or work with those instructions. The answer distinguishes the language from the application without assuming that every program has the same name.
Answer: A useful follow-up is: “Do you mean the Python programming language, or the application you open to write your Python instructions?”
Check: The question separates a language used to express instructions from an application used by a person.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling every kind of software an application.
Correction: An operating system is software, but its role is to manage the computer and support programs. An application is software used for a user's task.
Calling Python an operating system because a computer can use it.
Correction: Python is a programming language. A computer's operating system and the programs available on it are different kinds of things.
Calling the computer or phone itself an operating system.
Correction: The device is hardware; an operating system is software that runs on the device.
Classifying something only by its name or brand.
Correction: Use the item's described function. If its function is unclear, ask what the person means.

Lesson summary

  • An application helps a user perform a task.
  • An operating system manages a computer and supports applications.
  • A programming language is used to write computer instructions.
  • Distinguish the three by their roles, even when they appear together in one situation.
