Read the words, then examine the design choices

A media text can state one message directly and suggest another through colour, framing or selection. An explicit message appears in words or clear images. An implied message is a possible meaning that a viewer infers from choices in the design. These are not the same as proof of the creator’s private intention. This lesson uses an invented school-club poster so that every claim can be checked against the described example.

What you will learn

  • Identify the poster’s stated message.
  • Explain one possible implied message with a design detail.
  • Avoid claiming to know an unspoken intention.

Examine the invented poster

Imagine a poster headed “Join the lunchtime robotics club!” Beneath the heading is a large photo of two students assembling a small robot. A smaller line says “Beginners welcome; meet Tuesday in Room 12.” This is an original description, not an actual school advertisement. The explicit message is that beginners may join a Tuesday club meeting.

Notice what the design emphasizes

The large photo may suggest that the club involves hands-on building with peers. The image occupies more space than the room number, so it may attract attention before the logistical details. That is an interpretation of the layout, not a measured claim about how every viewer responds. A viewer who needs an accessible room may instead look for location details first.

Check the limits of your reading

The poster does not say whether coding, design, testing or competition is required. It does not reveal whether the students in the photo are club members. A careful analysis uses phrases such as “may suggest” and names a visible choice. To evaluate effectiveness, you would need feedback from the intended audience or a clear criterion, not just your personal preference.

Worked example

Analyse a poster without guessing intent

What is one explicit and one possible implied message in the invented robotics-club poster?
Poster message organizer
Poster message organizer1Message:beginners canjoin2Audience:interestedstudents3Technique: largebuilding photo4Effect: maysuggest hands-onwork

The effect is a plausible interpretation, not a measured response from viewers.

  1. Read the printed words
“Beginners welcome” and the Tuesday meeting information are explicit.
  2. Name a design choice
The building photo is larger than the room-number line.
  3. Qualify the inference
The photo may suggest a hands-on club; it does not prove what every meeting includes.
Answer: The poster explicitly welcomes beginners to the Tuesday robotics club. Its large image may imply that students will build robots together, but the poster does not guarantee the exact activities.
Check: The answer distinguishes a printed claim from an interpretation of design.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Saying “the designer wanted to exclude coders.”
Correction: Nothing in the description establishes that intention. Discuss what the poster shows and what a viewer might infer.

Lesson summary

  • Explicit messages are stated; implied messages are inferred.
  • Connect an implied message to a visible technique.
  • Do not claim to know a creator’s intention or every audience response.
