Worked examples

Start with worked Grade 12 examples

These original examples introduce selected Math 30-2 expectations. The full expectation map is not a complete set of published written lessons or a substitute for official course materials and assignments. The strand-prefixed labels below identify the matching Ontario specific expectations; titles are concise study-guide paraphrases.

1. Two overlapping sets

In a class of 30, 18 study mathematics, 12 study science, and 5 study both. How many study at least one?

Worked method: Count the overlap once: 18 + 12 − 5 = 25. Five study neither.

2. A periodic model

A tide model is h(t) = 2 sin(πt/6) + 4. What are its midline and period?

Worked method: The midline is h = 4. The period is 2π ÷ (π/6) = 12 time units.

Try independently, then check

Write your own solution before opening each answer. If a step is unclear, review the matching expectation or a Grade 11 prerequisite.

Practice 1

If P(A) = 0.6, P(B) = 0.5, and P(A ∩ B) = 0.2, find P(A ∪ B).

Show worked answer

0.6 + 0.5 − 0.2 = 0.9.

اگر P(A) = ۰٫۶، P(B) = ۰٫۵ و P(A ∩ B) = ۰٫۲ باشد، P(A ∪ B) را بیابید.

Practice 2

How many unordered groups of three can be selected from six people?

Show worked answer

6C3 = 20 groups.

Mathematical processes across expectations

These processes are practised throughout the course, rather than listed as separate lessons.

  • Interpret results in the context of a stated situation.
  • Connect diagrams, numerical tables, equations, and verbal reasoning.
  • Show when calculator output is an approximation, not an exact result.

Curriculum-aligned and reviewed before publication

This independent study guide follows the official course source. It is not an official government, school, or university publication.

Lessons may be AI-assisted or editorially prepared. Published content is checked for structure, notation, calculations, course boundaries, and readability before release. Because corrections can still be necessary, readers can report a problem.
