Worked examples
Start with worked Grade 9 examples
These original examples introduce selected SNC1W expectations. The full expectation map is not a complete set of published written lessons or a substitute for official course materials and assignments. The strand-prefixed labels below identify the matching Ontario specific expectations; titles are concise study-guide paraphrases.
A plant is eaten by an insect, and a bird eats the insect. Where did the bird’s food energy ultimately come from?
Worked method: The Sun supplied energy captured by the plant in photosynthesis. Energy then moved through the insect to the bird; matter cycles, but energy flows through the system.
A neutral atom has 6 protons. How many electrons does it have?
Worked method: It has 6 electrons because a neutral atom has equal numbers of positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons.
A 3 V source is connected across a 6 Ω resistor. What is the current in this idealized circuit?
Worked method: Use I = V/R = 3 V ÷ 6 Ω = 0.5 A. This is a model calculation, not an instruction to build a circuit.
If 1 cm on a model represents 10 million km, about how far apart are two objects separated by 150 million km?
Worked method: 150 million ÷ 10 million = 15, so the model separation is 15 cm. Keep the scale and the real distance distinct.
Try independently, then check
Write your own solution before opening each answer. If a step is unclear, review the matching expectation or a Grade 8 foundation topic.
What is one difference between matter cycling and energy flow in an ecosystem?
Show worked answer
Matter can be reused through cycles; energy enters, moves through organisms, and eventually leaves as heat.
An atom has 8 protons. What identifies its element?
Show worked answer
Its proton count, called the atomic number. An atom with 8 protons is oxygen.
At the same voltage, what happens to current if resistance increases?
Show worked answer
Current decreases according to I = V/R, for the simple model used in this course.
Why use astronomical units rather than kilometres for distances within the solar system?
Show worked answer
The distances are very large, so astronomical units make comparisons easier; 1 AU is about the average Earth–Sun distance.
Scientific investigation processes across expectations
These processes are practised throughout the course, rather than listed as separate lessons.
- Research: ask a focused question, compare reliable sources, and cite evidence
- Experimentation: plan safely, identify variables, record observations, and explain uncertainty
- Engineering design: define a need, build or model a solution, test, and improve it
- Coding: model a scientific relationship and explain the assumptions and limits of the model
