Course codes matter because a Grade 9 equation, Grade 11 function, and Grade 12 calculus question need different explanations. Begin with MTH1W Grade 9 Math for number, algebra, graphs, and data; MPM2D Grade 10 Math for quadratic relations and analytic geometry; or MCR3U Grade 11 Functions for function transformations and trigonometry.

For Grade 12, use MHF4U Advanced Functions for polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, and MCV4U Calculus and Vectors for rates of change, derivatives, and vectors. Your school course outline remains the authority for what you need to study.

What to bring to a math tutoring session

Send the course code, the full question, your attempted work, and the first step you cannot justify. For a quadratic question, for example, note whether you are trying to find zeros, a vertex, or an intersection. A tutor can compare a graph and an algebraic method, ask you to explain why a step is valid, then give you a similar problem to solve independently.

If you need a quick refresher first, read the relevant free lesson and mark where its method stops matching your question. The tutor request goes to approved tutors who list the selected subject and language; a session is confirmed only when a suitable tutor accepts.

A useful first question: what does a graph show?

Suppose a graph crosses the x-axis at 2 and 5. Those values are zeros of the function, not the y-intercept. For the quadratic y = (x − 2)(x − 5), the y-intercept is found by setting x = 0, giving y = 10.
